Etsen

Etsen is een oude grafische diepdruktechniek waarbij je “krast” in plaat. Dit kan zijn een plaatje van zink, van koper of tegenwoordig ook van karton of acrylglas. Het etsen heeft een sterk ambachtelijke kant maar is zeker de moeite waard. Het geeft vele extra mogelijkheden in vergelijking met een tekening.

Het etsen is onder te verdelen in twee soorten technieken: een techniek waarbij je zuur gebruikt en een werkwijze waarbij je dat niet doet.
De techniek zonder zuur heet officieel geen ets, maar “droge-naaldtechniek”. Je kerft dan met een scherpe etsnaald diepe lijnen in (meestal) een zinkplaat. Als dat klaar is, inkt je de plaat in en veegt het oppervlak van de plaat weer schoon. In de dieper gelegen gedeeltes van de plaat blijft de inkt zitten. Als je dan een stuk vochtig - en dus plooibaar - papier op de plaat legt en het geheel onder de etspers doorhaalt, wordt de inkt door het papier opgenomen. Dit is de afdruk, de ets die je voor je ziet.

Etchings

Etching is an old, graphic engraving technique where you ‘scratch’ the plate. This could be a zinc plate, a copper one or these days also one made of cardboard or acrylic glass. Etching has a strong element of craftmanship, but is certainly worth the effort, because it gives you many added possibilities compared to drawing.
 
There are two different techniques for etching: one in which you use acid and one in which you do not. The one without acid is officially not an etching but is called the ‘dry needle’ technique. With a sharp etching needle you carve deep lines in (usually) a zinc plate. If you have finished, you ink the plate and wipe the surface of the plate clean. The ink stays in the deeper lines of the plate. If you put a moist, and so more pliable, piece of paper on the plate and put this through the press, the paper absorbs the ink. This then is the imprint, the etching you see before you.
